Construction and Building Trends to Expect in 2023

Posted by Tristan Angelini on 27 December 2022

We're almost done with 2022 – and it was indeed a whirlwind of a year for the construction and building industry. Although businesses have significantly improved their processes, and it seems like things are back to normal, the events that transpired over the last two years still affect how we work today.

In 2023, industries are expected to keep growing and innovating. Clients are much more demanding these days because they want more options and are pretty much more specific with what they want to see. Trends come and go, but if you choose wisely, they can be long-lasting, and the same philosophy can be applied to the construction and building industry.

Here are five of the trends that builders should look out for in 2023.

Green Building and Renewable Energy
Energy plays a vital role in the building and construction industry. We are all aware that energy is money, and it's become costly, especially these past several years. Various organizations have started shifting to renewable energy, and more are expected to do the same this 2023. The main thing about renewable energy is that installation costs more upfront, but because of the free energy they produce, they end up becoming more cost-efficient; plus, they can operate for a long time, ensuring that you get your money's worth. And because the construction industry also plays a role in fossil fuel emissions which affects the climate change issue, it's one step in continuing the green building practices that can help the planet.

Smart Devices
The growth of innovative and energy-saving devices is expected to continue in 2023. Whether new construction, add-on, or renovations, the industry is seen to incorporate and install energy-saving and efficient devices due primarily to client preference. These devices may complement renewable or sustainable resources, or they can also work independently. Either way, it's something that we will definitely see more of in the future.

Biophilic Designs
One design expected to go big in 2023 has to do with an environmental, architectural design that uses or emphasises the building's natural qualities. This design is known to mimic the outdoor environment seen in the way the shape, texture, and colours are used. This design allows the occupants to feel more in tune with nature, which has been an overall theme in households these past couple of years. Some of the most popular biophilic designs include natural light, earthy colours, greenery, ambient sounds, and free-flowing shapes.

Remote Worksites
Strict safety protocols were in place in 2020 due to the rising COVID infection rates. It has been 2 years, and it seems like we've become more open to the possibility of working efficiently remotely long-term. Construction companies are seeing the potential of remote worksites and even mobile access since it has been proven and tested that this setup works. This would encourage job sites to adopt more digital applications and tools, for instance, providing more accurate photo documentation to clients, contractors, inspectors, etc. It's also an excellent way to continue working phases of construction, even offsite, which saves time and money.
